Safety Patrol parent helpers
To ensure the safety of the children in your school parking lot, create a sign-up sheet for parent volunteers to monitor traffic in and out of the parking lot.
Classroom Stations
Many teachers look forward to parent volunteers in the classroom. It's a way for teachers to spend more individual time with the children and plan some enriching activities. Here's a planner teachers can use for a classroom. Maybe have 3 stations twice a week: reading, mathematics and performing arts. Parents sign up to volunteer for one day per week. Reading the Time for Kids magazine out load with a discussion afterwards is a good reading project for a station. Acting out a historical event such as Rosa Parks bus ride is fun for performing arts. Try tannagrams for a spatially oriented math station tinyurl.com/3dc45v. We must have to admit, getting to know the parents well is an added bonus.
English Breakfast with Strawberries
What could be more delightful as a teacher appreciation event or a school parent mixer than indulging in these British delights! To make it really festive have the ladies wear a hat and the gents a bow-tie! Simply adjust the quantities or number of volunteers needed to suit your function.
Ice Cream Social
When the days get warm, host an Ice Cream Social. This type of event is a great auction prize, a way to thank your volunteers for their year or hard work or even as a simple all school social activity. It can be a simple activity to organize. Just bring the ice cream, toppings, bowls/spoons and your event is ready to go. This Jooners planner makes it even easier to sign up participants to bring supplies and host the event.
International Day Festival
International Day can be used as a fundraiser or just for some fun. The day is filled with activities representing many countries. Participants can represent a country of their national heritage or the committee chair can assign a country. Entertainment can include dance exhibitions representing different countries, booths showcasing games or crafts from a country. End the day with a talent show. You can hand our recipes from past years and collect new recipes into a cookbook. To turn this into a fundraiser sell tickets, charge for food or sell a cookbook from the recipe submissions. To make a cookbook here is some advice: tinyurl.com/ageusz and tinyurl.com/ba5lt8.

Thanksgiving Class Party
Celebrate Thanksgiving in your elementary school class with a "Thankful because" Thanksgiving class game and, of course, food! Have each child write a note for each classmate telling them why they are thankful. Slip these notes in goody bags for each child to bring home. They can then slip one of the notes under a parent's pillow at night for a great surprise Thanksgiving morning. Organize parent donations for each activity with the sign up sheet here, either as a supply or cash donation.

Graduation (Elementary School)
Organize a low key affair for graduating from elementary school. Coffee, cakes, speeches and lots of photos. Easy to set up and deliver. As part of the ceremony the PTA president can give a tribute speech to parents who are the volunteer stars of the graduating 5th or 8th grade graduate class. A sweet idea is to present a poem to each graduate extolling their virtues or where they are headed in life. Hand a lovely rose to each graduate as their name is called. It's nice to hold this event during the school day and invite the younger children at the school to attend and share in the joy of the graduates.
Halloween Group Party - elementary school age
Halloween's origins date back to an ancient Celtic festival! Today cookie decorating, making popcorn witches hands and biting donuts on strings make a fun classroom halloween party! Use the list below to ask for donations from the parents to make organizing the party a snap. A good description of the donut eating game can be found at http://guidezone.e-guiding.com/jmdoughnut.htm. Have a "hauntingly" good time!

Kinder After School Enrichment List
Some days of kindergarten end at noon. Here are some ideas for enrichment programs that my children enjoyed during the afternoon. You may be lucky enough to have these offered by the PTA on your school campus. If not, ask your PTA representatives for some good options for classes in your area.
Kindergarten Orientation Picnic
Have a potluck to orient all of the new kindergarten parents with the school and their fellow kindergarten parents. It's ideal if a kinder alumni sets up the event as they will know the ropes. It's nice to have a "get to know you" game. Have a name of a cartoon character posted on each attendee's back. Ask questions to guess your cartoon character. Speeches from the principle and PTA president will make everyone feel welcomed into the school community. Here's a planner to show a list you can follow for this type of event.

Dividing up the helper staff into time slots works well for many events. At a book fair a volunteer can work for an hour then browse the book sale for the rest of the day. A carnival booth can be manned for an hour and the helper can enjoy the festivities after that. See this live Sign-up sheet for a template which lets you request volunteers for shifts in a snap.

Stone Soup Feast- Honoring Teachers
Based on Marcia Brown's book "Stone Soup", cleverly trick your school's parents into sharing their food--by making a lavish soup out of seemingly nothing but stones! Many schools have students make the soup to honor their teachers around Thanksgiving. The teachers read the story to the children. Use this planner to get all of the ingredients you need for the soup pot (and enough pots to serve all the hungry teachers). This sign-up sheet gathers enough ingredients for 24 servings. Here's the Family Fun recipe: http://tinyurl.com/yt9mmn

You may also consider having a Valentine's Day card making station. This sign-up sheet requests volunteers to help at the party, food for the party and materials for the "Love Jars". For busy parents that can't participate or shop, request they make a small contribution of $5.00 to help purchase supplies. (It's SO easy to collect money with Jooners. Just set it up in Step 3). Good cookie mix recipes and instructions can be found at http://familycrafts.about.com/cs/giftsinajar/a/122099a.htm. The amounts in this planners will make 16 jars.
